Category B+E Driver Training Lessons and Courses
Truck Services offers driver training for anyone looking to tow a trailer, horsebox, boat or caravan with a car or small vehicle.
Category B+E Driving Licence
Cat B+E driving licence entitlement allows you you tow a trailer or caravan heavier than 750kg with a car or small vehicle when the combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the towing vehicle and the trailer or caravan is more than 3,500kg.
MAM or maximum authorised load is defined as the combined weight of the vehicle, trailer and load you are carrying. It can also be referred to as the gross vehicle weight.
What can you tow?
If you passed your Cat B (car and small vehicle) driving test after 19th January 2013
- you can tow a small trailer weighing no more than 750kg
- you can tow a trailer weighing more than 750kg provided the combined weight of your vehicle and trailer is no more than 3,500kg MAM
If you passed you Cat B (car and small vehicle) driving test after 1st January 1997
- you can drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, 3,500kg MAM and tow a trailer up to 750kg MAM
- You can tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500kg
If you passed you Cat B (car and small vehicle) driving test before 1st January 1997
- you can drive a vehicle, trailer and load with a combined weight of up to 8.25 tonnes, 8,250kg
For all driving licences held from 1st January 1997, you will need to complete Cat B+E car and trailer training to get B+E entitlement on your licence.

Category B+E Driving Course
If you hold a full Category B driving licence you can start to train with us.
Our Cat B+E training course will instruct you on safety, uncoupling and recoupling the trailer, reversing and driving on various roads.
Category B+E Driving Test
The Category B+E driving test starts with an eyesight test and a selection of 5 safety questions.
The examiner will instruct you to drive on various roads which can include dual-carriageways, motorways and one-way systems.
You will be asked to reverse the vehicle and trailer and also couple and uncouple the vehicle and trailer.
The test takes about an hour in total and a pass will result in you gaining your new Category B+E licence entitlement.
